Athletics
Welcome to MKA Athletics!
Interscholastic athletics serve a critical educational function that complements the traditional classroom. Athletics are a "real life" setting for the practice of competition, cooperation, and adaptability: the principles upon which our society is based. In athletics, one must compete against an opponent, compete against oneself in terms of constantly striving to improve, work effectively with teammates and coaches, and perform in a continuously changing environment, as no two contests are ever the same. MKA athletics offer students the opportunity to be on highly successful varsity teams (MKA athletes have won over 100 team championships since 2000) and to receive quality coaching that will develop their talents to the fullest, in an environment that expects the highest standards of conduct from every athlete, coach and spectator. In addition, each season every Upper School team works together on a community service initiative, extending those lessons of sportsmanship and team building and using them to benefit others.
At The Montclair Kimberley Academy, our approach to athletics can be summed up in three ideas:
Opportunity -Students have extensive opportunities to be on a team if they wish to, provided they are willing to adhere to the commitments required of them by the coach.
Quality - Our goal is for every athlete, team and coach to develop their talents to the fullest, and compete to the best of their ability.
Sportsmanship - We believe that winning is not just achieved on a scoreboard, but also requires the highest standards of conduct from athletes, coaches and spectators.
In short, our ultimate goal is simple: to create an environment where players want to play, coaches want to coach, and parents and alums will be proud. And while national statistics indicate that only 3-4% of all high school athletes go on to play at the NCAA Division I, II, III or NAIA level, a remarkable number of MKA’s senior athletes are recruited to highly competitive Division I and III schools each year.
